Unable to change / edit gallery slider in a post/gallery #1

https://katecharlwood.co.uk/

I created my website in 2014 using your free WordPress Thoughts theme. I still like it a lot, but am doing a long over-due update.

All is going fine EXCEPT for one thing. I have a slideshow which appears at the top of my homepage. My Homepage is set to show my posts. The slideshow is above one of my posts (entitled MY WORK), which has a been set to Gallery format, so I’m presuming that it’s in that post that the slideshow is generated. But I can’t find where it is picking up the gallery images from and I need to change some of the very outdated images. If I go to the original post, there is nothing to show me where the images are coming from. I would add a screen shot but can’t see how to do this on the forum.

I have searched high and low, spent hours on trying to solve this…. Can you point me in the right direction? THANK YOU!

Hi there,

This is AJ the theme developer.

So this is actually a much older theme it looks like the theme still works with the gallery meta options so when you edit the post you should find a box to select and modify the images. I made a little video to show you here: https://cl.ly/e8dd0b

Now, by default if the image gallery section is empty (it's never been saved before) it will fallback to the "attached images" which is the images uploaded to the post. And you can see from my video above that the design is a bit off (the borders and such) and is in need of an update.

I'm actually working on updating all my free themes I can try and push this one to be next on my list and let you know when the update is ready. If you want me to ping you when it's ready let me know I can reply back to this thread.

Now, I see that your site is a business site and you are showcasing a lot of stuff. Have you considered maybe investing in a premium theme? I have a very popular theme named "Total" which you can check out here: http://total.wpexplorer.com/

It's a $59 theme but it has more features then you could possibly imagine to help you really customize the look and feel of your site and some built-in stuff that you may find very useful like the included portfolio post type for displaying your work. It's actually used by a lot of big name sites including the University of Hawaii.

Sorry didn't intend this to be a sale pitch, definitely happy to push out an update to this theme as it is desperately needed but it will take some time. But I know some people haven't really considered or experienced premium themes so I wanted to throw it out there ;) And if you are potentially interested but have any concerns/questions let me know!

Hi AJ

Thank you so much for you email! It is very kind of you to reach out and try to help me. Thanks also for the tip about your Total theme. I will have to take a look at that.

But I do love the simplicity of the Thoughts theme… and once I was able to tweak the colours with a plugin I loved it even more. It would be grand if you could push it to be next on your updating list...

I took a look at your video and noticed a few things. Firstly, my editing area looks very different to yours. This may be because I decided to update to the very latest version of Wordpress 5.3.2 before I started updating the website? (I also updated the PHP version to 7.2.11. I literally hadn’t done anything on this website since I created it back in 2014.)

The 'My Work’ shown above is the post where the Slider appears, but the gallery does not show anywhere on here, I can’t scroll down any further.

Further more, if I make a new test gallery post, (without any images added) I get this (screenshot below) - at the top is a kind of ‘ghost' gallery slider. The copy on the grey box on left says gallery.php on line 22.

I can add a gallery to the new test post, but I can’t get a slider gallery. And the old ‘ghost’ gallery remains at the top (screenshot below)

I took a look at the content-gallery.php theme files, to see if I could find any clues on line 22, but I’m not a coder and to be honest I really don’t know what I’m looking at, or for…

I loved that slider at the top of my posts page, it was so big and bold. Do you think something got broken when I updated to the newest Wordpress?

I’m not really expecting you to solve my problem, but wondered if any of the above might help you when you come to update the theme.

Regards Kate

Hi Kate,

Yes, definitely just sounds like the theme has some issues due to recent WordPress changes and it's in need of an update/refresh.

I'm thinking of actually changing the way things work a bit for the galleries to be consistent with how I make themes now.

Can you let me know if there is a concern about missing old galleries or mostly just wanting to make sure new ones show up?

Because my plan would actually be to re-structure the way the gallery slider is setup so it's done in a better way, which means old posts will only display the featured image and if you want a gallery you would need to edit the post and select the photos to display (I will add in some filters though so you can make child theme modifications if you wanted to auto grab images via different methods).

I'm thinking I can probably knock this update out at some point this week. But wouldn't be able to provide an exact ETA.

I do appreciate your feedback and letting me know of the current state of the theme - kicking my butt to finally make the updates ;) Because I have so many customers for my Total theme and it's very popular I actually spend almost every single day providing support and making updates for that specific theme so it's hard to find time to focus on my free themes. I'm working on hiring a bit more help though (for support mainly) so I can focus on developing new free themes and updating the old ones.

Hi AJ

Just want to say your customer support is 2nd to none, I will definitely look into your paid themes when I’m ready.

I don’t have a concern about missing old gallery sliders, as I only have the one, and I need to change it to feature all my new work anyway. My concern is to make it a big and punchy slider like the one I currently have, and for it to show on my homepage, (which is set to have posts showing, not a static Homepage).

I made a new post with a new slider using NexGen Gallery plugin, but A. the slider doesn’t show up on the Homepage and B. the slider is not big and punchy like my old one. Currently on Homepage is the new test post right at the top (MY WORK NEW), if you click on 'read more' you will see the slider attached to it.

Old original post with slider is 2nd on Homepage. https://katecharlwood.co.uk/ https://katecharlwood.co.uk/

I also need to get rid of the ghost grey PREV NEXT boxes which automatically appear at the top of any new post I create.

Here are a few other clues for you to peruse.

When I tried to update the plugin Symple Shortcodes, I got this error message.

In order to update the plugin, I had to download the symple-shortcodes.zip and re-install. I now seem to have two copies of the Plugin, but I’ve only activated the new one.

I think that my original slider gallery was installed using Symple Shortcodes. I can’t quite remember, but I know it took me a while to get it looking how I wanted, and was elated when it finally worked! So perhaps that is where the problem lies (I am totally guessing, and have no expert knowledge at all….)?

Two other things about the theme code. It has this red error message

When I look at line 18, there is A TON of stuff on there, and I’ve no idea how to find col 17005 to fix the problem? (I googled it to see that an Rbrace is a curly bracket) Here is all the code on line 18 - I put it into a .rtf as there is so much.

Anyhow, I can only mention that I’m incredibly grateful for your help, you sound very busy and like business is booming, which is great. If you do get to update the theme soon that would be so cool, but there is absolutely no rush as it’s taken me 6 years to do an update already, another few days won’t matter 😂

Regards Kate
