Build a cursor that is more informative than the native crosshair.
Ideas:
Sketchpad has a crosshair with a cut out center. The center is a tiny hollow dot. When you are near enough to edit something, the dot jumps to the thing that's selected so you can see that what you're cursor is active on is not necessarily where the crosshairs are.
