Add a loupe. Perhaps recursive loupes...

Good things about Apple Aperture's Loupe

[ ] shows size of the area zoomed relative to the composition

Good things about 53 Paper's Loupe

[ ] expands when drawing inside the loupe extends beyond the loupe.
[ ] becomes 50% transparent while moving
[ ] adds a crosshair while moving
[ ] gestural

Other things

[ ] Allow the loupe to follow the cursor as well as stay in place
