Followed a bunch of disjoint threads to get mine working, but this was the most comprehensive/helpful: https://www.nintyzeros.com/2019/11/flask-mysql-crud-restful-api.html I also found installing MySQL Workbench to be a somewhat helpful as a gui of my local databases.

Add a line to the .env file following this template: connection string template = "mysql+mysqlconnector://< user>:< password>@< host>[:< port>]/< dbname>" eg: DB_HOST2 = "mysql+mysqlconnector://gift_app:***@Heathers-MacBook-Pro-2.local:3306/user"
