It turns out the \mathstyle primitive expands to an integer in a macro-like not register-like way, so termination is required.

Apologies! You do have commit access to this repository you know ;-) Do you need a CTAN release shortly?

Yes, I know that, but I'm not the lead here :) The bug's been around for a while, so a CTAN release would be good.
