Refine pronunciation #24

@cb0s proposed to pronunce the project "Telestschn" what do you think?

I have to say I'm not a huge fan of this idea.

To me, "Tae-less-tee-on" sounds rather educated and a bit mysterious (fitting the scientific, yet experimental nature of the project).

"Tae-less-chin", on the other hand, to me sounds like "Kollatschen", which is a piece of pastries you can buy on the weekly market here in Würzburg. While it is a good piece of food (I can highly recommend trying it), it doesn't really fit the project. It, to me, sounds a bit like trying to pronounce a word that sounds strange that way in an English way just for the sake of it.

My mind-set here is the following:

  1. Is it an English word? No.
  2. Does it make sense to pronounce it in an English way? Maybe 🤔? But probably not really...
  3. Does it sound better in English pronunciation? In my opinion: Hell no 😜 !
  4. Is it possible to have a different pronunciation for the project without loss in marketing etc.? Yes.

Therefore, it is my opinion that an English pronunciation of the word isn't a good idea. Besides: Having a non-English pronunciation could even do a trick or two in marketing (cf., e.g., the Open Suse project)...

Ok, I really get what you are saying @pklaschka but in my opinion due to the similarities to the English words telemetry and station, "tele(metry)-st(at)ion" would make sense...

Though if you all are not a big fan of this we can keep the old pronounciation.

BTW: Open Suse and potentially many other projects, too, may have their names pronounced in their native tongue, though "telest-ion" sounds... Let's say didn't really feel right to me and this is why I proposed the idea for the "rename" in the first place.

So to make a list like you 😄

  1. Is it an English word? - Maybe?
  2. Does it make sense to pronounce it that way? - Perhaps, if we say its origin is not German otherwise I suppose not...
  3. Does it sound better? - Hell YEAH :D
  4. Is it possible to have different pronounciations for the project without loss in marketing etc.? - Yes.

Conclusion: The sense of changing the pronounciation depends: if we define the origin to be German it would be a stupid idea to change it otherwise we should at least reconsider.

I perceive it as "pseudo-Latin," to be honest (which might have something to do with me having never learned real Latin in school 😉). It's, in my mind, kind of close to "Albion" having slight associations with "X3: Albion Prelude".

The thing is that to me, the English pronunciation sounds more German (maybe slightly Swabian) than the current one (to me, pronouncing it in English sounds like it should be written "Tellässtschen" as it just doesn't sound English).

I, myself, would instinctively actually pronounce Telestion in French pronunciation, meaning I'm not "fixed" on the "pseudo-Latin" pronunciation. It's just the "German English" version sounds... off... to me.

When I think about possibly talking about the project on a stage, saying "I am a developer advocate for the Tellässtschen project" just (to me) sounds more like something Günther Oettinger might say 😜

Okay we have some points on both sides. We will vote in our founders meeting. Until then we keep it how it is. Thanks for your long answers, I will use them in the founders meeting.
