Java WebStart and Applets support are closed sources not provided by Oracle to
OpenJDK project so they are not available in OpenJDK for OSX.

That is a big problem. THe Java web start functionality is horribly broken on
10.7 and 10.8. The user interface integration has been broken for over a year
and Apple has done nothing about it. I was really hoping that this could be
resolved from the OpenJDK project.

Is there no work to get these items open sourced as well? Are there any other
implementations that could be incorporated for community releases?

For reference, this is the issue I am referring to.
http://lists.apple.com/archives/java-dev/2011/Jul/msg00154.html. Invalid
desktop shortcuts/app bundles are created that will not launch. Have seen this
on every 10.7 machine and am seeing similar issues from 10.8.
