Temp merger optimization #1024

Just another case of accidentially quadratic runtime complexity. Profiler showed that this takes up a rather large chunk of overall test time.

TODO:

[x] Fix bugs introduced by refactor
[ ] Check that optimized output for the tests is the same as prior to this optimization.

Coverage increased (+0.05%) to 63.505% when pulling 81a12445e42ea6ba5722e2ea90f4297bdfcd6da7 on temp-merger-optimization into c3f1e8f038c41bb128b8b05983fa2be5351bb184 on master.
