Effects stop working when I pause youtube #2297

Describe the bug

I'm really just trying to use easyeffects with compressor and equalizer from lsp-plugins-lv2.

I just want to bring up the volume of dialogue and bring down the volume of explosions and other loud things.

I'm especially watching old movies on youtube that are hard to hear.

But every time I pause a youtube video, and resume, easyeffects remains running but those plugins are doing nothing, no error messages.

I tried drastically increasing the "inactivity timeout", didn't help.

Please advise.

Expected Behavior

Easy Effects and its effects continue to run until I explicitly tell Easy Effects to quit.

Kill EasyEffects easyeffects -q and restart it in debug mode G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=easyeffects easyeffects so we can see if there are errors when the video is paused. Under normal circumstances EasyEffects PipeWire hsould be relinked when the player's stream is active again.

Thanks for your quick response.

In this session, I first paused a half minute or so, and resumed, no issue.

Then I paused for maybe three minutes or so, and resumed, and experienced the issue.

Sorry for the crazy long comment. I've used pastebin and the like for years but I wasn't sure it would handle so much text. Then, I didn't think github would post as it did.

In any case, I've just noticed something I hadn't seen before: The Compressor, though I only had it on the default, in "Upward" mode is at times going too far. I still don't see quite how that relates to just pausing and resuming though. I can watch a movie for hour hour, pause to get a glass of water, come back and restart and the effects will not be working, necessitating (or so I believe) an easyeffects restart.

I have done some more debugging today and learned a little:

  1. I can't seem to reproduce the problem with Firefox
  2. The problem exists for me in Chromium and Chromium Incognito, even if I only pause for a couple seconds
  3. With Chromium, resuming after pause, in the first split second, I hear a sound and see the Enable checkmark, but it nearly instantly becomes unchecked and hence no easyeffects for that Chromium source

Don't know if it means anything but at that point, I found that rather than restarting easyeffects, an alternative is to click "Enable", click it again (ie. uncheck), click it a third time, and it works again.

That doesn't really help me so much because I still have to get up and go to the desk where laptop is and go through those steps.

For the moment I guess I can start only using youtube with Firefox when using easyeffects, but I'd still very much like to be able to stick to my main browser, Chromium.

Just so I make sure I understand the problem when you say "doing nothing" do you mean it is the same as activating the bypass or there is no audio?

The fact that is only happening with chromium suggests the server latency may be related. While EasyEffects is running execute pw-top so we can take a look at the QUANT and RATE columns when each browser is playing audio. The estimated latency in seconds can be calculated as QUANT / RATE. Maybe when chromium is running PipeWire switches to a latency value that is causing problems.

Chromium: QUANT = 1024, RATE = 48000 Firefox: QUANT = 2048, RATE = 48000

I see. So there is no activity in the spectrum. Could it be that something (most likely wireplumber) is moving Chromium away from EasyEffects virtual sink? If this is the case deleting the folder ~/.local/state/wireplumber/ and rebooting may help.

Right about no activity in spectrum.

Tried the wireplumber bit but unforttunately still no luck. Always I have to click the Enable checkbox 3 times or stop and start easyeffects, for Chromium.

I am trying to reproduce the problem playing something on youtube but so far nothing. What is happening on your computer may be a more severe variant of #1789.

I will need a little time to digest what's going on in #1789 but I will look into it and report if/when I find anything useful.

Meanwhile using FF for video is not such a bad thing, but now I'll still try to get to the bottom of it if I can.

I don't want to jinx it, speak too soon, but I believe I have found the solution to my problem. Not sure how helpful this might be for other folks but here's what I just discovered:

I use my Dell XPS 15 pretty much as a black box. I almost never even open the lid. So I don't use built-in mic, built-in audio, built-in camera, none of that stuff.

I went into Pavucontrol, and I think these are all the things I did:

  1. Under "Configuration", turned Built-in Audio to "Off"
  2. On Input Devices, muted the io4 Analog Input (I know this should not be necessary but since I'm not immediately needing it, muted it)
  3. Maybe something else I forgot within Pavucontrol but I pared things down in Pavucontrol in general (even though of course I'm using pipewire and not thinking about pulse)

I'd still be interested to know how exactly this caused the strange effects within pipewire / wireplumber / easyeffects, but meanwhile so far so good [knock]

I'll leave this open for today just because there are still so many variables and I don't want to count chickens, but assuming things stay ok, I'll close this out later today.
