Python3 support #49

It appears that the build system assumes python is aliased to python2. My Linux distribution (gentoo) has all but abandoned python2, and has aliased python to python3 for a while now. As python2 is officially no longer supported, we should probably look into migrating to python3. I'll see if I can do some of the conversion myself.
