remove demo dependency on distutils; fixes issue 2519 #2520

Fixes #2519 I don't know whether distutils's LooseVersion did add value.

Umm yea thanks, that was unneeded CRUFT in my opinion... I sort of misseded it for so many years. LOL . Ask Robin
