Of note, the DVOA Board has regularly discussed this, including ideas of hiring profressional contractors (who they've underestimated the cost of), and of radically simplifying the site (which is possible - e.g. just-start-over) but loses even more functionality than what already concerned Wyatt & Vadim about some of the WordPress project was going toward.
One board member is especially concerned about security leaks. Most are fine with the existing site, if we can keep doing minor updates to that.
AJ did a proof of concept of dvoa-beta.com, and this was discussed / generally approved by the board in early April, and by Vadim on April 28th.
Decision made to do a clean install of WordPress, and slowly add items in and interlink them with the regular site, rather than doing a full restore of Bob Gross's site (which is currently on dvoa-beta.com) as that has several feature we won't be using, so we can selectively install only the ones that are needed.
Pre-WP-install backups in progress (beyond whatever GoDaddy claims to do automatically):
Okay, after several hours... got it working, and a home page reasonably close to as pretty as dvoa-beta.com
Still todo - schedule pages, and many other static pages - maybe getting help on the static pages from Julie?
Updated the Beginners static page, and some of the Events static pages - but not the schedule yet...
The current custom php/MySql site works, but is hard to maintain, keep securely updated, and make look good on phone screens.
From ~2019-2022, Bob Gross made substantial progress on a WordPress site that would've acheived these goals - but Vadim & Wyatt were concerned it would've lost much existing functionality around results, rankings, and web-forms for schedule updates.
In Spring 2022 (and potentially early between Bob & Vadim?), a Hybrid site was proposed, with things like eBoard and static pages in Wordpress and the rest still in php/MySql - which seems possible, and may provide best-of-both - but we've yet to find a volunteer to take that much further, in part because even it has some issues - e.g. the boundry vs. the Php/Sql and WordPress near the membership database, e.g. around who's allowed to post to eBoard, is not yet design-resolved. In Dec. 2022, Wyatt wrote up: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_hlAaAJfvGYvlGgDKujrzd3czPrIl2Sdsh6LcUuI-3s/edit#slide=id.p but this hasn't been discussed in much detail.
