New install issue: APLL pad broke off. #295

Hello. I recently tried to install an X-Station into my SCPH-5502 Playstation. After following the instructions and putting it all together I noticed that nothing was working, no picture on the TV, no light on the X-Station. While going over the test points as shown in the image I noticed that the solder on the APLL pad was a little loose. I chalked it up to me not doing a good job and was going to reflow it after testing everything else. But as I was testing the rest the solder on the APLL pad popped up and the metal pad underneath was brought up with it. I am still relatively new to modding, having only worked on old NES/SNES consoles in the past. Does anyone have any ideas on what I should do to fix this issue. I will include an image so people can better see what the problem is.

Hey, that's a bummer, but thankfully not too hard to bypass :) You can solder a wire to the flat flex connector on pin 12, counting from the left, and route that to the oscillator. grafik

Note to take care that the wire does not run across those PCB metal areas, which will be making contact to the metal shield when everything is back together. If the wire runs across those spots, it would get crushed and probably even shorted to ground.

Thank you for the help. I have connected the wire to pin 12 as instructed. Now for something that will probably make people laugh. The reason I wasn't getting any power was because I stupidly forgot to re-connect the power cable back to the main board. It now powers up but it loads straight into the memory card/ music player select screen. I have seen other threads from people who had that same problem, so I will check through those for a solution first before I request more help.

Well, seeing the dull lead-free solder, I already had a hunch :p It's okay. Measure all signals against nearby signals in Ohms mode. Anything under about 3kOhm is suspect.

While checking over the board again I have noticed that the pad at connection point 15 also will not connect to the x-station board. I have tried reflowing the solder, removing the solder, and putting some fresh down. The solder will stick to the playstation board but not the point on the x-station. I don't know if that is the only problem but it is the only one I could find for now.

It would certainly explain the issue. This is the I2S word clock signal, required for any CD transfer :) I think the "15" means that it should connect to the flat flex connector point 15 (but better check). If so, maybe you need to route a bodge wire.

Good news. I've managed to get it working. After putting another wire on the connector I noticed that two of the pads next to the previous wire had a very tiny bridge from the solder. After removing it and testing things again the X-Station now seems to be working perfectly.

Thank you for the help.

Glad to hear :) Please feel free to close this issue, once you're convinced that it's done now :)
