Create a small text about the basic purpose and functionality of the application. Possible location: in the menu above the tags

How about we use our README.md as location for the description of the website (purpose, maybe with link to the final paper?) and include the file in our website? This way visitors on the repo will also know what its about. We could also include a help icon next to our new github icon in the toolbar and put the description in an about dialog (so it plays along with our current dialog design of the antipatterns).

That sounds good! Still: a small sentence in the menubar on the left would probably not hurt as well, because people will see that before they start exploring icons in the navbar.
