App not being maintained. #5

Open jayb-g opened 1 year ago

jayb-g commented 1 year ago

Purpose of this issue is to know status of the project and its future roadmap.

It looks like such a great App but unfortunately the app doesn't work at sign up and sign in process itself.

The only dev seems to have changed email as per readme and not commenting on already open issues.

Thanks

Or is there any easy workaround/fix in order to make the app usable ?

fromage9747 commented 10 months ago

@jayb-g At least I am not the only one experiencing this. What a pity. Google Family link has some great functionality, but in certain aspects it's too restrictive and doesn't provide enough control. I had hope to remove Family link, give my kid a full Google account and then add restrictions using KidSafe.

Hopefully someone will fork it

what features of the app you need the most? what devices do you have? Tablet/Phone and dimensions?

abubelinha commented 2 months ago

My preferred features (as described in README):

Most preferred:

Interesting:

Too much intrusive in my opinion:

If someone knows of a good alternative please let us know here !

RasheedAZ commented 2 weeks ago

I was just asking someone not to blindly trust a closed-source app which demands full device control while distrusting their child. However, no open source alternatives appear to exist that are still maintained. Best maintained FOSS solution I've come across is NextDNS and Zood Location, but they do some of what parents require not all.

Perhaps we all could crowdfund for this with a few requirements like:

Add requirements you need in such an app. See how much the developer would need to work full time on it. Ask him to create a campaign on a crowdfunding site. I like Launchgood because they option for zero platform fees. Also Geyser for the crypto people.

Good idea worth spreading ! And child safety is such a common concern that i feel it won't be a problem finding any sort of funding, wether private or public.

Have a way to generate recurring revenue so it's not abandoned, like paywalling some advanced features which would be under a different license.

I agree that sustainability is an important point, but i disagree about the solution of premium features, especially if they have a different license. I'd much prefer the solution most foss maintainers choose, which is providing premium support, hosting and live services.

Funding is a big concern with lots wf caveats i don't know much about, our best bet should probably be to find some public structure, organization or association to support welcome this idea and receive and manage the funding for it. Anybody knows of structures like that that could help us ?

@RasheedAZ If I had the time I would build it.

I was thinking about this the other day and I realised that the issue we're trying to solve here isn't necessarily related to parenting, kids, etc. We appear to be looking for a solution for owners to hand out devices to users (who can be kids, students, volunteers, employees, etc.) while being able to restrict, specify and monitor their usage.

Now about the paywalling, you can probably guess what's going to happen with the normal way most FOSS projects go. Some corporation is going to use it to secure their fleet of phones, tablets and computers and contribute nothing back while the developer(s) are struggling.

By different license, I don't mean closed source, just a different way of doing it so those trends don't harm the project and the developers can maintain it long-term and also pay their bills.

Endless OS Foundation could be a good match. Or perhaps FUTO might be interested? Or we could set up under Open Collective?
