Questions regarding the reproduction of Mistral's results on mt-bench #4

Hey Team,

Thank you for this awesome work and for releasing the super clean training code! We are super interested in reproducing result on Mistral 7b model.

I have trained a Mistral model with exactly the same HP / config used in repo with 4 A100 GPUs using flash attention:

Right now I have checkpoints of 3 epochs and I have evaluated both of them on mt-bench progressively, the result is not as good as shown in paper though the paper trained for 5 epochs (I'll for sure update the 5-epoch result on mt-bench on 03/24 when training finished)

Above are score / plot I got on mt-bench so far, it's not even close to the 7.32, could you share more details on how you did the evaluation on mt-bench so we can follow exactly the same steps to reproduce the result, thanks a lot!! @jiwooya1000

Hello, Thank you for your interest in ORPO!

The model is trained with this chat template by using' main.py' without any change. However, in Fastchat's MT-Bench code, mistral would use the [INST] ~ type of chat template as default.

Could you try it again using the following conv template in Fastchat for Mistral?

@jiwooya1000 To double confirm, you also enabled fast tokenizer which is default setup in mt-bench right? https://github.com/lm-sys/FastChat/blob/085c2c37dca426059f023e2a080c45717c742fd1/fastchat/model/model_adapter.py#L82 though I have evaluated both and they don't seem to have big difference, would love to have the same as yours

Yes, I did not change the fast tokenizer setting. Could you share the sample generation from your replicated model and check if you used the latest version of the code? There was an issue with saving the model with FSDP in #3, which is resolved in the current code.

Sure here is a sample from 3 epoch model with the new template, I compared with the old template, the result is much better, I am running llm as judge now and will share result in a moment!

One more question, have we compared orpo on 7b model with DPO? In paper we reported opt small models but curious how it compared to larger variant like 7b model.

For 7B models, we compare Mistral-ORPO-⍺ and Mistral-ORPO-β against the Zephyr series. As you would already know, Zephyr models are trained on:

1) SFT on 200k instances of UltraChat 2) DPO on 61k instances of UltraFeedback

On the other hand, our Mistral-ORPO series is trained on 61k instances of UltraFeedback only. As UltraFeedback is the preference dataset annotated by GPT-4, I believe AlpacaEval can be a good metric to show how much the model aligns with GPT-4's preferences. And we've reported some positive results in Figure 1 and the Results section!
