fixed #662 (this is the second try because the first on had random changes to utils)

Maybe make a CompatUtils class? The code that goes into the Utils class seems to already exist

I've made the changes TejasLamba requested but the random spaces etc. for utils are back; should I make another pr or can you just merge only the changes to the BridgeAssist class? You guys are correct, the changes to utils weren't necessary; again sorry for the inconvenience.
