Hashes should be marked with the algorithm used, to eventually allow users to choose the one(s) they feel to be strongest, and prevent transition issues like the one the git project is running into when the chosen hash eventually fails.
Checkpoint outputs should of course at all times inform the user what hash was used to make the checkpoint, and the user should be able to query for more information on how much of the stream has been checkpointed by which hashes.
