Website design #18

In tinkering with the xproc.org website, I couldn't help noticing our website designs are inconsistent. If you click around you'll notice three different designs:

  1. The specifications, for instance core, following some official standards design
  2. The spec.xproc.org with a rather utilitarian design
  3. And xproc.org with a more fancy design

This is probably grown like this over time and not the result of a conscious decision (?).

The design of (1) is something we can't do anything about, so we don't have to discuss that.

The design of (2) and (3) are under our control. I think it would be good if we tried to make them the same.

Then the question of: what design. I know I'm going into personal preferences land here, but IMHO the design of xproc.org is rather out of character with the kind of information. It looks almost frivolous, bookish. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but not for the kind of information we want to present: technical. It's also way too different from the design of (1).

I therefore propose to find some simple (responsive) straightforward design, that is more in line with the design of (1), and apply this to (2) and (3).

Can we discuss this next call?

I changed the layout of the site (mainly changing the font to simple sans-serif). And (this was a long-standing request by Achim) moved the "nutshell" part to a separate page. It is a bit duller now but IMHO this is more appropriate (feel free to disagree of course). It looks much more like the main specification, so there is less visual clutter when navigating around.

The only way I could think of to make it visible to you is by zipping the build dir: build.zip

Can we discuss this on our next call?

@ndw I very much would like to take the https://spec.xproc.org/ page, reformulate it a bit (there is now duplicate information there that is already on the xproc.org site) and make it look the same as the rest of the XProc site (whether my new or the old design, whatever). Is there a way we could bring this page over to the xproc.org repo or maybe force the new design in its existing location?

Maybe: Have this page redirect immediately to a (new) page with this info in xproc.org? Then we have everything together and maintenance of our "web presence" in one place.
