Upgrade The Lounge #4

It looks like you guys are packaging v1.5.0. Since then, we have released v2.0.0, v2.1.0 and v2.2.0 when it comes to minor bumps. Each of them comes with a lot of new features. The latest version is v2.2.1.

Are there any reasonable (i.e. not Cozy-specific) changes we could make to the upstream project to make sure it's not a complete pain for you to stay up-to-date with the project?

y-lohse commented 7 years ago

I've followed the work on v2.0 and it looks really great. Congrats on all that!

However, Cozy Cloud is switching to a new architecture where it won't be possible to run third party scripts -- at least not right away. I personally don't plan on porting the new version of The Lounge to the current architecture as it will be phased out in the next few months. Thanks for the offer though :-)

astorije commented 7 years ago

Does that mean you will stop offering The Lounge for Cozy altogether or that you will keep The Lounge v1.5 for your current arch or that you will only support The Lounge v2 on the new one?

y-lohse commented 7 years ago

The Lounge v1.5 will still be offered on Cozy on the current version, and if someone decides to port he newer version, then they would be available as well. On the new arch, no Lounge at all -- but to be fair, a lot of other apps will be missing. I hope there will eventually be a way to have third party apps again, and The Lounge would be one of them if it happens, but I have no informations on this so far.

Hey @y-lohse, almost one year later, do you have any updates on that?

We released a few substantial releases since v1.5, and as we're working on v3, I am completely revamping the docs. As part of that, I added a section that links to Cozy. It would be great knowing that support for The Lounge is recent :)

Also, could you add the thelounge topic to this project, so it ends on this page? 😊

Thanks!

Hi @astorije !

I've added the thelounge topic to the repo.

Regarding the Cozy, integration, I'm afraid there are no good news :(. We've officially launched the v3 of Cozy Cloud which does not support The Lounge, and the v2 version is being deprecated. I really appreciate you putting Cozy forward like that in the docs, but in good faith I can't say it's still supported.

The new Cozy Cloud has a much tighter control over what runs on the server, and node scripts are a lot more blackboxed and can't run forever. There's currently no plan to change that and I don't see it becoming a topic in the next couple of month. So the server part of The Lounge would have to run on a different machine or something, and that would probably be a lot of work for not a lot of benefits.

There's definitely interest for an irc client in Cozy, internally as well as for our early adopters, so if something changes you'll hear from me. But it doesn't really align with Cozy Cloud's business goal's at the moment :(

Salut @y-lohse, merci pour ta réponse !

It's rather unfortunate to see that Cozy has moved away from the open source offering out there :( But I understand, business decisions are business decisions!

In this case, it means we will have to remove Cozy from this list, unless/until some kind of connector becomes available.

Indeed, let me know if anything changes, I will be happy to re-add you in the list.
