first things first: we need to be minimalistic and out of the users way.. 
because, the 
user is trying to accomplish other tasks, not use our software...

update:
prototype overlay panel ui attached.. preferably, lets convert the web ui t 
this first.. will give good idea of how it will feel.. [yadu: can you implement 
this tonight itself ?]

Additionally, there should be visual feedback for paused and active tasks.

possible mechanisms:
1. paused tasks are greyed/faded
2. active tasks have a heartbeat color glow - needs to be very subtle
3. paused/active tasks have different colors
