I know that abstruse message well, and still cannot tell you how I managed to fix it so often. The only thing I do remember is taking away the conviction that the whole gradle ecosystem is rotten to the core.
Make sure you have the expected build tools (30.0.2, not the suggested 31.0.0) pre-installed? Dunno.
I would check the build tools as well I can tell you that the gradle dependency download occurs in every run off the github actions, so it's definitely not entirely broken
./gradlew clean
./gradlew check
all right, but not clean/rebuild from the Build menu - same moronic ZipFile error. Reinstalling 30.0.2 fixes that immediately.Did a hard reset to version 3.15.0 (picked at random from around the first time I got it set up), and everything works fine. Then checked out the latest version and NOW it works fine. So workaround for now, but something is fishy.
I definitely had API 30 installed via the Android Studio SDK without it working. And I tried installing Java 8 and 11 in various combinations.
Not API. Build tools:
Ohhh. I missed that checkbox. Still, everything seems to work now (and 30.0.2 was installed somewhere along the way)
Now that "hard reset" working is an interesting tidbit. 3.15 was gradle 6 I presume? Would fit then, it leaving 30.0.2 tools in the cache.
Yep, that was 6.something. I think that's the likely explanation. At least two other people on Discord had similar problems so we should probably add that screenshot to the wiki.
The question on what part of my scratchpad to migrate to the wiki is still open... For me and for now, I'll just make sure it's there (could well already be No it isn't) - including where to read the exact requirement out of.
Installing version 30.0.2 is the fix. Thanks! I've added the fix procedure to the getting started wiki page so this issue can be closed if there is nothing we can do about it.
Thanks everyone!

Describe the bug On a freshly installed OS and Android Studio, Gradle no longer seems to work. Is it dependent on having downloaded some additional file when using a lower version number? I tried editing the version number in gradle-wrapper.properties, but that gives different error (
