Be paranoid. Test:

DOS and UNIX newlines <--DOS newlines must still be trimmed.
with and without terminating newline <--OK both with & without.

A quite pleasant surprise: executing canvas with no commandline switches (IE, world map, no boundaries) went from ~48.2-49.X s down to ~8.5 s total run time. Not bad!
