When selecting a list item, it would be nice to mimic the default browser behavior of being able to Open in a New Tab/Window.

I assume you mean being able to open a new tab/window by doing Ctrl+click and the like - in which case, yes, I agree.

Yes, with a "normal" URL link, you can right-click or ctrl-click on it and have the option to open in a new tab/window.
