Bug with quality settings #78

Closed RandomDude66613 closed 2 years ago

RandomDude66613 commented 3 years ago

Bug found, I'm downloading same album on main PC and VM, quality set to master but in one case it downloaded 44.1 / 16 bit and in other 44.1 / 24 bit, i tried other album and it downloaded 48.0 / 24 bit. Sometimes i try to download same album multiple times or download one song from the album and I'm getting different sample rates even tho that the quality set to master. IMG_20201219_211857_722

I'm having same issues

RandomDude66613 commented 3 years ago

Solution found, there are 3 same albums listed in GUI, each one has a different sample rate, basically try each single one until you get the highest quality possible. image

In my case the album which I wanted was only two instead of three and both of them downloaded in 16bit instead of 24bit.

I have a few albums that are only 44.1 / 24 bit, I guess that all Tidal has to offer. image image

Also, there's 96.0 / 24 bit available in Audirvana but GUI only able to get 48.0 / 24 bit. image

Darsh3190 commented 3 years ago

That might be the case but I don't know why this is happening. When I stream the same album from tidal mqa in uapp then it streams at 24bit but when I download the same album from tidal gui then it's downloaded in 16bit instead of 24bit. How is it so?

I confirm with my setup, I detect 24bit 96Khz Album and with the Downloader, it's capped at 24bit 48Khz. 24Bit 88.2Khz Album are capped at 24bit 44.1Khz. I believe it's by design, some device won't support such high quality then it's capped by Tidal, halved, in a matter of fact. I believe the Downloader emulates such a device that won't support more than 24bit 48Khz.

gmanoverboard commented 3 years ago

You screenshot shows 48/24, in Tidal it’s a 96/24. Either it’s in the emulation either it’s in the MQA to FLAC converter.

One has to understand what MQA is. MQA always comes in 16bit or 24bit and in 44.1kHz or 48kHz files. Higher sample rate files do not exist! If you have MQA player software (Audirvana, Roon) then it will upsample and play the file as 24bit (even when it said 16b) and a multiple of double the file sample rate. So 2x = 88.2kHz or 96kHz. MQA calls it 'unfolding' but it's just upsampling. If you have MQA hardware (renderer and decoder) it can become even more (4x = 176.4k or 192k; 8x = 352.8k or 384k). Basically MQA is some kind of MP3. It is lossy and will never fully restore what was there. If you want full quality, you should switch to Qobuz, which is still offering the full quality files. (24b 192k IS in a 24b 192k flac there)
