Loses GPS fix while recording #76

What steps will reproduce the problem?

While I record a track, MyTracks loses the GPS signal. Being on foot or
bike outdoors, GPS reception should be excellent. MyTracks just keeps
displaying "Waiting for a better GPS fix", no matter how long I wait.

A fairly reliable way to get a GPS signal again is to stop recording in
MyTracks. It will usually quickly regain GPS fix, and I can start recording
a new track.

If I try opening the "GPS Status" application before stopping the tracker,
it will achieve contact with no satellites at all, as if I were indoors.

What version of MyTracks are you using? On what version of Android? On what
phone?

MyTracks 1.0.15, according to Android Market. (The first log below from May
19 may be one or two versions older.)

Device model: HTC Hero
Firmware version: 1.5
Kernel version: 2.6.27-8dd6deee
htc-kernel@and18-2 )
#722 PREEMPT Wed Aug 19 18:12:40 CST 2009
Build number: CUPCAKE.eng.u70000.20090827.103405

Please provide any additional information here:

I attach some log files. The first one, from May 19 2010, is from a typical
session where MyTracks lost fix, and regained it when I stopped recording.
I then started recording a new track.

The second log is from a very short walk when MyTracks lost fix. The third
log file continues the second. Here, I tried stopping the recording. That
will usually do the trick as described above, but not this time. I then
launched "GPS Status", which did get a GPS fix. MyTracks was then fine again.

The problem has happened with virtually every track I've recorded for the
past few months. There has been cases where tracking has resumed again by
itself, but most often it will stay "Waiting for a better GPS fix" until I
hit "Stop recording".

I think this is 2 separate problems. I too have had the app stop tracking in
the middle of a recording session. This was recently fixed for me in the 1.0.17
version, however I still have a problem with the initial GPS acquisition. As
you said using GPS status first to get the fix and then switching to MyTracks
fixes the problem.

Is this still an issue with the current version of my tracks?
