trouble distinguishing between Editor and Contributor with same Firstname Lastname

Tom's latest post got linked with a contributor named Tom (which could be his editor account tied to his gmail?) as opposed to the correct contributor Tom Scocca which presumably is the contributor with the fake email. So he pops up twice in homepage masthead now.

So goal is to preemptively set a way to avoid this at the goal line when editors are posting. Do we simply change his editor name to read Tom Scocca Editor?

OK suggested that in fh-editorial and that worked, they did it. So two approaches here could be either a) restricting homepage masthead to user type contributor, or b) make homepage masthead an editable field in our theme.
