I think this only happens when you first login. If you hit the assistance request directly, and return to the home page, the status is displayed correctly.
Also, I believe that when the status is not displayed, you can click on the Request Assistance button that would normal be visible on the image and a new request will be created. This can lead to a user having multiple open requests.
