The main problem is, that in yii2 the 'formbuilder' is cancelled. I have the idea to port in two steps:

Actually, Yii2 relies even more heavily on a major supplier of extensions named Kartik-V (http://demos.krajee.com). Kartik has something called Builder (http://demos.krajee.com/builder) which is comparable to the Yii 1.1 FormBuilder. You might be able to extend that when you get a chance to work on it.

Add a custom 'itemView' for the multi-model to yii1 version, that allows to use mmf without the formbuilder features and allows custom item views to clone.
This is useful for yii1 too.
