There's really simple rationale behind becoming a validator:
 1. if you have _lot_ of xem, you should care if finalization is happening or not
 2. current amount required is definitely to large, but everyone wanted launch, and we didn't have enough time to find out sensible values, the value was picked based on how many messages we want to operate in the network (we really want to keep number of votes < 1000 for scalability.
 3. That doesn't mean either the amount or the rules are set in stone. One of the ideas that we're thinking about, but haven't really shared yet is validator pooling. We haven't shared it, as it requires some longer writing, designing and actually thinking if it makes sense
 4. That being said, it's really easy to criticize, but it would be more valuable to propose some solution and then rally for it. I do believe crypto community in general is about rallying around ideas.
 5. We're not deaf - and I think we've shown that more than once, if proposal is *sound*, we'd certainly be interested in bringing it to life.
