With vmd we aim to render markdown as it's rendered on GitHub as closely as possible. It's so that you can write your markdown files and preview how they will look on GitHub, and view readmes from GitHub repositories locally. Rendering "common markdown" would probably break compatibility with GitHub.
Is it unreasonable to ask to support TWO types of Markdown?
That's an option. Is Common Markdown the same as CommonMark?

GFM is nice and all, but it has some inconsistencies with common markdown; most notably for me, the characters used to generate a table.
