Hello,
I have found the same problem. I am using a Froyo N1, using other softphones
everything works fine with the gsm codec, ad sipdroid works fine with my
provider which does not use the gsm codec.

To make the GSM codec work properly you will need to:
First, you will need to set it to "Always try",
Then, 'long press it' and select "Move up one place" on the opening popup
window (repeat until it reaches the first place).
This worked for me on my voip.ms account with my Nexus One 2.2
I hope this work for you too.

Same here with voip.ms... I disabled all the codecs except GSM, and when you
try to make a call with GSM it just throws you back to the android home screen.
PCMU does not have this problem.
