Suggestions not working anymore #399

Current setup: FireTV Stick (Fire OS 5.2.7.2, Fire TV Home Version 6200198.1) App Version 6.17.245 Using Youtube without logging in (never used it logged in)

Problem After updating to the current version on my FireTV stick the ̶s̶̶u̶̶g̶̶g̶̶e̶̶s̶̶t̶̶i̶̶o̶̶n̶̶s̶ video recommendations on the home screen are way off. I get ̶s̶̶u̶̶g̶̶g̶̶e̶̶s̶̶t̶̶i̶̶o̶̶n̶̶s̶ recommendations for russian kids shows, indian talent shows and oriental magicians (Not exaggerating, this is what it shows me). Selecting a different location does not change anything (i.e. United States instead of Germany). Watching anything different does not influence the suggestion screen as it did before.

Things i tried so far that did not help

Are you talking about suggestions that shown under the video or about recommended videos on home page?

I meant the recommended videos on the home screen.

Hmm. I didn't noticed that. Anyone experienced same issue?

Maybe it is just me. Could you tell me where the settings are stored in the file system? Maybe i could delete them by hand via an adb shell and reinstall the app.

All settings are stored on google servers. They are linked to the user's account.

Which or whose account? I am not logged in to Youtube with any Google account, it even asks me once in a while if i want to to log in to get better recommendations.

Only the Fire TV Stick is registered with my amazon account.

It doesnt matter. All settings still stored on google servers. Only difference is that settings now linked to your ip.

I get a dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP every 24 hours (pretty standard for internet users in Germany). So it could be possible that the former user of my current IP address watched the aforementioned videos?

Same issue here. Also is no longer saving my search history. I am in the USA.

I installed this APK on my Fire TV 4K and paired it via the TV code on my mobile phone Youtube app. The country is set to Germany and I have also a German dynamic IP address but the recommendations are still in Russia and India. Is their a way to change it?

I reverted to version 6.17.162 (last stable before current release) and currently use the "PRO Main" launcher. Fixed the recommendations issue* for me.

I reverted back to version 6.17.216 and recommendations are working again. This version also maintains my search history, newer versions do not.

No sorry. That 305 versions still has both problems. Recomdations are random Russian and Indian stuff AND not saving search history. Sticking with 216 for now. 301 version also is working ok.

Have either of these 2 issues been addressed in newer versions? I'm still using 301 in order to have relevant suggestions and search history.

No. I didnt get enough response from users.

I just upgraded from version 6.17.301 to 6.17.346, the search history is kept, but the recommended videos are not related to what I watched previously.

Device: FireTV Stick 4K (Fire OS 6.2.6.8 (NS6268/2315), Fire TV Home Version 6200198.1)

Same issue with using the app as a guest (without logging in) on Fire Stick 4K.

Logged in works as usual.

Going to try v6.17.301.

Update: v6.17.301 seems to be the same when signed out/using as a guest, search history is kept, recommended videos on the Home Screen are not related to previously watched videos.

Also recommendations on the Home Screen are still Russian, India, on USA IP and location.

Another Update: I reverted to v6.17.216 and had the same issue when signed out/using as a guest:

I will just keep using the latest stable version as it works fine. Thanks @yuliskov, we appreciate all you do!

Which old version makes suggestions work again when using Youtube as a guest (not logged in)? As written above, the newer versions make suggestions that are not related to the previously watched videos... but downgrading to a previous version doesn't help.

Do I have to do something before downgrading? Maybe delete some file on the Android-TV device? Would it help to change the country or language setting?

Version 301 works for me. After downgrading, I believe I cleared the cache and selected the option "reset app" (available in the settings of the app).

It still is not working for me. As soon as I updated from 301 to 356, the recommended videos became not related to the previously watched videos, but the search history is kept. I didn't see any change even after resetting the app and playing a couple of videos.

I just installed 356 on my phone and search history and suggestions are working! I'll try on my fire stick 4k tonight which is where I actually use SYTTV.

Does not work for me. I do however not login and it has worked in the past without logging in. This is on a android stick.

I installed 6.17.356 on my phone, cleared cache and data, and didn't sign in.

Haven't tried my Fire Stick though.

@yuliskov Thanks a lot for such a great application! Are you sure the settings are linked to the IP address? On my Windows 10 laptop I just deleted the YouTube cookies (Chrome browser) and the recommended videos on the home page immediately became not related to the previously watched videos.

@yuliskov I just updated to 6.17.482 on my Android TV Box and the recommended videos are working again. For me this issue could be closed. Thanks!

Open the app, you should see a prompt about an available update.

@yuliskov So it seems that these issues occur on the official YouTube app on Nvidia Shield and in Guest mode using YouTube on a mobile browser (Android).

Testing both:

I also read on the community pages that others have the same issues.

Hopefully YouTube will fix it. Thanks for everything!

Has anyone gotten suggestions to work again in guest mode? It used to be working, but now it doesn't work no matter what version I use. Search history seems to be working now.
