Hasn't functioned well on Fire TV stick for a few months #736

I didn't realize the feedback forum was here. And while it's likely some of these things have come up, I don't have the bandwidth to comb through the posts and sort out what has or hasn't been mentioned -- be it in general or as it specifically relates to a Fire TV stick.

(I use the app exclusively on several Fire TV sticks. I can't say what may or may not be behaving differently on a Fire TV vs an Android phone or tablet.)

This app was MINT until some time mid-year there were changes: with its interface (some good, some meh) and with its functionality (some strange behaviors and several functions no longer working as they used to). I recently even went through the act of rolling back to prior versions of the APK. Interestingly, that had zero effect on the look and functionality of the app, leaving me to wonder if issues have their root in changes that YouTube has made versus things about the SYT interface? Maybe there's just something that's buggy about how things are working on a fire stick? (Same issues, BTW, on 2nd gen, 3rd gen & 4k models...)

IDK... But being increasingly frustrated with a few things not working well has me 'this close' to abandoning the app, which in turn lead me to this site, seeing the seeing the forum and figuring that I'd at least take the time to illustrate the nonfunctional aspects of the UI that have really detracted from my user experience.

(1) Watched videos, more often than not, not being captured in the watch history

(...which has meant that recommended list/s do not evolve as they should, are nearly exclusively limited to channels I'm subscribed to and often show videos I've already / recently watched)

(2) Can't save a video to a list from the 'initial' in-video options

When you click save, the list of categories does not appear on the right as it used to. The in-video menu disappears. For a while it seemed like things were getting saved into watch later -- ie/ the first playlist on the list -- but that isn't happening now.

I say initial, as there's a second path and presentation to get to saving a video that's part-and-parcel of the navigation issue I previewed above...

(3) Can't get back to a video after you navigate down from the initial presentation of options

If you hit the select button to pause, or the down or up arrow, video info and options pop up. You can navigate around and out of that, back into the video, no problem. But if you press/navigate down after that initial display of info and options, things go south...

Interestingly, if you wait until the screen saver kicks in, it un-sticks you from the "Loading..." screen. You will return to the point you left off in the video.

A couple of exit points...

(1) I'm actually happy to take a few minutes to illustrate all of this over video chat, if any of this is new of different to other feedback and/or doesn't seem to be consistent with your pre-release testing or what you can/can't replicate using the app on a fire TV stick.

(2) I love the options that come up on the main screen, now, when you 'long press' on a video! (ie. play, not interested, save to watch later, save to playlist, go to channel). It would be fantastic if this list functionality were extended into other screens on the main interface -- like history & watch later -- with appropriate options (ie. remove from watch history, remove from watch later) swapped into the list

It's a great app. Thank you for the time you've invested into it. Thank you for being receptive to feedback.

(...which has meant that recommended list/s do not evolve as they should, are nearly exclusively limited to channels I'm subscribed to and often show videos I've already / recently watched)

  • inconsistently captures videos I select out of my recommended list, but only about 1 out to every 4-to-6 (?)
  • seldomly captures videos I select out of any the lists generated below the recommended list OR anything I select from a subscribed channel OR anything I select after doing a search
  • captures nothing that I watch from the suggested video lists within a video -- that is to day that either appear at the end of video or when click down on the navigation buttons (note: additional issue after the down click forthcoming)
  • some, but not all, videos I've liked (in the app, versus playing from YouTube on PC) show in the liked list but not in the watch history

(2) Can't save a video to a list from the 'initial' in-video options

  • black screen appears that just says "Loading..." -- and sticks there until you press down again...
  • pressing down again brings up a different screen where a play bar appears, a different presentation of options above it, and a number of lists below it ---> Play bar -- 'the dot' is all the way to the left, versus where you are in the video, and doesn't move if you press right or left while it's highlighted ---> to issue #2 https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartYouTubeTV/issues/2, above, if you navigate the 3 icons that appear above the play bar (channel, captions; more) to save, you get the save video list, fully functional ---> lists of videos below include: untitled list; suggestions; videos from the channel; videos from that topic; related; recently uploaded; and finally options for search or home) ---> unless the video you're playing appears in the first list -- off screen, to the left -- you're stuck / there's no way back into the video (hitting the select button, while on the playback bar flashes the play symbol on screen, but it is still stuck saying "Loading..."

Interestingly, if you wait until the screen saver kicks in, it un-sticks you from the "Loading..." screen. You will return to the point you left off in the video.

I have stuck with version 6.17.724 for many months and I haven't had any problems (knock on wood). Might try that version and see how it works for you. If you plan on sticking with smart youtube Tv or follow yuliskov's link above. I do believe smart youtube tv has been cut from the project list.
