What does port forwerd mean and should I check it?

If the daemon runs behind a router/firewall, you have to use port forward. More

As far as I understand, if you have a UPNP enabled router as the gateway for the
host, this option will cause Transmission to open an incoming port.

Myself, I forward the port manually on the router web interface because it's
generally more reliable.
