I tested this branch on 3.10.7 and just installed 3.10.8 and the IR control is working on both (after changing the version in the API file).

Thanks @Hexagon! Looks good on first glance. I'm still on 3.9.12 but will try to find the time to update in the coming week and will handle #2 and merge after I've had a chance to run this.
