The initial two builds of the Purple Tentacle used stainless steel for the plate and the bottom, and clear acrylic for the spacer and top frame.

I used stainless steel 1 mm for both the plate and the bottom, 10 mm clear acrylic for the spacer, and 5 mm clear acrylic for the frame. The laser cutter facility provided the steel, but I had to purchase acrylic separately. The four details cost me ≈40 USD, cutting included.

The resulting case is pretty heavy, weighing in at ≈2 kg. Steel details contribute ≈1 kg to that.

The 5 mm frame leaves a small gap between the top surface of the frame and the bottom edge of keycaps. When one of my two cats feels particularly naughty, he is able to pry keycaps off with his teeth. If he persists, I may have to swap the frame for a 8 mm one.
