Coloring all markdown symbols for which the respective formatting was applied (especially # in headings, */_ in emphasizing, > in quotes) would
increase readability of the text,
allows to concentrate on the content,
puts the technical aspects of markdown into the background
and still allows for the editing of these symbols.
Here is an example, where this is used:
