[docs]: More detail on the OMZ/Prezto and Zi interaction #309

Description

  1. Coming from OMZ, it is a quite a bit difficult to understand the interaction between this tool / this GH org and the rest of the ecosystem. For the sake of argument, I was able to load F-Sy-H within OMZ without Zi at all, have (so far) had trouble to get zi/zpmod to work without zi, and don't know if I want / need the rest of zi. I suppose I will, for plugins that are zi-specific? Which it's unclear which are and which are not.

  2. But then it's even more confusing-- suppose I have an existing OMZ configuration-- nothing special, just some zstyle/var config, a bunch of plugins loaded, a custom theme, some additional aliases... it's unclear what I need to do to migrate. Sure, the guide explains plugins and themes-- no issue there.

But I just have the standard source $ZSH/oh-my-zsh.sh line. What am I to do here? Am I to explicitly go through every OMZ library that any of my themes/plugins want, and explicitly load them with zi snippet? That feels unnecessarily verbose; I can safely assume that I will need everything or nearly-everything that the main oh-my-zsh line provides.

  3. This becomes even more confusing when I consider... how does Zi keep the OMZ snippets up-to-date? What if I'm using my own custom theme / plugins that are wrappers around other OMZ plugins, how do those interact?

I'm not a Prezto user, but I imagine the same applies.

Doing some more reading tells me that this project itself is a fork of zdharma's zinit (which died and then came back via zdharma-continuum); but now zdharma appears to be back and is redirecting people to this? But zdharma-continuum is still releasing zinit?

All a bit confusing to say the least.
