Emoticons in text box obstruct caret from moving backwards.

When typing a message in the text box, if I type an emoticon or insert one
manually, it blocks the caret from moving backwards.

Say I type (intentional typo):
"Just jolking :P"

After the emoticon appears, if I hit left arrow to attempt to fix the
mistake it doesn't move past the emoticon (Gets stuck on the right side of
":P"). Interestingly though, I can hit home key which gets past it. Then
after that it doesn't get stuck going over it to the right but gets stuck
again trying to go left.

I'm using SVN version on Ubuntu under Gnome.
