I’m getting the same very loud noise. It sounds like feedback and you can’t
lower the volume.
Everything was working fine so I know it can work
Then I opened Audio Midi Setup and moved the format to see what would happen
and then that loud noise took over. Moving the format again does not make that
terrible noise stop.
I am running OS 10.8.5 and Soundflower 1.6.6b
I have tried several times to get Soundflower to work again but to no avail.
The only way to stop the noise is to selected internal speakers in System
Preferences but then I can’t get sound on with the screen recording feature
in QuickTime.
Any ideas of how to resolve this?

I experimented with the situation a bit more today. When I click on “Built in
Output” it always stays checked and the low frequency feedback begins. If I
open Audio Midi Settings and adjust the frequency in Soundflower’s 2nd
channel the tone changes slightly. 44100.0 Hz is a lower loud blasting sound
and 96000.00 Hz is a higher loud blasting sound.
It all started when I wanted to record a short video on my computer via
QuickTime with sound so I downloaded Soundflower. Soundflower worked as far as
allowing me to record sound with QuickTime (a feature Apple should have just
included with the software).
I noticed the volume was always very low after installing Soundflower and I
didn’t like it. At times when I was just watching a video I could hardly hear
it. I began looking for a way to increase the volume.
I found Audio Midi Setup and was able to adjust the volume and that worked
great. I remember thinking, “I wonder what this does?” …and the rest is
history as I touched the frequency pulldown menu. Why did I ever touch that?!
That’s when the loud blasting feedback like sound began. Imagine your
computer’s speakers on full blast… it’s sounds that loud.
If I click on Soundflower’s Built in Output the loud sound begins. The same
happens when I click on the frequency pulldown menu in Audio Midi Setup. If I
quit Audio Midi Setup the sound continues. It’s only when I quit Soundflower
doses the blast finally stop.
Also, I cannot get Soundflower to work at all anymore. If I try to bus the
sound through Soundflower it is dead silent… until I adjust something to
start that feedback again.
Did I meant ion it is very loud yet? It is not possible to adjust the volume
through any of the following means: (in fact I haven’t found anything to be
able to turn it down)
Keyboard volume controls including “off”, System Preferences, Audio Midi
Setup volume controls, Audio Midi Setup preferences.
I used the uninstall script provided and then reinstalled Soundflower but
nothing changed. It won’t work at all since this feedback noise began. There
must be an extension or some part of a file not erased.
Setting System Preferences output as default sets everything back to normal.
However, I can’t record audio with Apple’s deficient QuickTime screen
recording (what’s the point of recording without audio? I asked knowingly).
I’m running OS X.8.4 (I accidentally typed 5 above… stupid crappy, dinky
little keyboard. How can anyone fit their hands on this puny little piece of
crap keyboard?!).

That means your headphones are looping the sound through your mic
Basically this is happening
Mic ----> headphones ---- > mic -----> headphones
Making everything you hear in your headphones repeat through your mic, repeat
through your headphones, looping your headphones over your mic, making it
duplicate sound over and over again.
It happened to me, but I never found out how to fix it, I uninstalled
soundflower, tried again and it worked, don't know what I broke, but an
uninstallation and reinstallation fixed it.
