Paid Hosting #2496

Open sigaloid opened 2 years ago

sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Edit: I launched! Visit https://trilium.cc/paid-hosting for more info.

It would be on a subdomain, so "example.trilium.com" (example domain; I don't own trilium.com). You could use it to access your Trilium instance wherever on the web, and as a secondary sync location/backup; in addition, thanks to the new sharing feature, you can use it to share your notes as a small website!!

The costs are actually not that high depending on how many people are interested, I just want to gauge interest in it for now. How much would you pay for such a service? Keep in mind the goal isn't profit, but more running a community service; I plan on donating some of the profit left over after the costs to zadam (if there's enough interest in it to even cover costs ●︿●).

Some details:

The cost will probably be very affordable (think $2-3 a month, possibly up-front for 6-12 months to pay for initial costs) but I'll give discounts for a few reasons (student, teacher, contributor to Trilium, extenuating circumstances).

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to reply or shoot me an email (admin@matthew.science). Whether I do it is completely dependent on whether/how many would be willing to use it, so let me know sooner rather than later :)

Hi Sigaloid.

Self-hosting is why i love trilium. I do not understand how other people share there (personal and intimate) notes with a cloud provider with other apps. Just don't ;-) You are right, since we can encrypt the notes, we would not need to trust the hoster too much, and that could be a good way forward.

My hosting looks as follows: I pay 5 EUR/month for a VPS (strato, v10) with 8GB ram and 4 "cores", 200 gb ssd. On this instance, I run:

However, the addition with different tenants inside trilium could still be nice feature, since it could be used as a form of trilium with multiple users. I am thinking something like the cloud/enterprise version of wordpress, where multiple tenants are possible

I think the trilium github might be the wrong place to ask, since I think that trilium is superior to all other note-taking apps and still, people use other apps and pay 3-5 or 10 USD per month.

One last note: I would be very much interested in thinking about creating a collective, or a non-profit organization that focusses on providing "cloud"-services like nextcloud or trilium to other people, so that we could provide some kind of libre alternative to hosting. If that makes any sense :-P

Unfortunately, I agree, but I wasn't really willing to advertise elsewhere (and couldn't think of anywhere else to go to advertise it!). I sort of thought that it wouldn't gain much traction here but I thought elsewhere it would have better odds with more general users. I don't know of a place where advertisements of that sort of stuff would be welcome, except if I were to accept crypto, maybe a crypto market trade forum perhaps...

I would be greatly interested in that as well. I would have certainly made this service free if I had the money to, as a community service (and probably gotten a few people to sign up for it :p). I do have a good amount of experience in running a server as I've ran my own server similar to yours hosting a bunch of self-hosted services for about a year now, so if you'd be interested in doing that, I would love to

MarcoFaccani commented 2 years ago

Hi Sigaloid,

I personally would be interested into it. I have used OneNote for several years now and only recently discovered Trilium and believe it to be a way superior software. I would have already moved to it if I had more experience with hosting (i need syncing).

About the price, I would pay 2-3$ per month. Is a fair price.

sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Thanks @MarcoFaccani ! I've sent you an email.

9s-l-s9 commented 2 years ago

I would be interested as soon as the sharing feature is improved (I imagine something similar to https://obsidian.md/publish or https://roam.garden/)

sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Do you mean styling? I think the styling is pretty basic but it wouldn't be too hard to style it with some basic CSS. Or do you mean more feature-wise? Stuff like searching content, dynamic tree, etc?

9s-l-s9 commented 2 years ago

More feature-wise. At least the (local) note map.

peteshaw commented 2 years ago

I think this would be a great idea. I feel like Trilium is one of the best solutions to the 'rich notes online' problem, and is in many ways superior to Evernote and Onenote, with the possible exception of quality of life issues such as simple set up, sync without self hosting, documentation, etc., and this would be a great way to support development and broaden the user base.

sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Awesome. I'm working on finalizing a few things but it's 99% done. I should be able to put the website online within the next few days, I will update this Github issue.

sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Okay, I've launched it! https://trilium.cc/paid-hosting

Hoping for my first few customers soon 😄

zadam commented 2 years ago

Great job! Let me know if (when) you want to link it on the github README.

peteshaw commented 2 years ago

Subscribed! I was already self hosting so this only buys me a small convenience, but I am glad to support this fantastic project. One suggestion for your flowchart - I don't know why this is not documented, but at any point in Trilium you can right click on the root node, and export it.

This is effectively a backup. In the same way you can right click on the root node and select import into note.

This always seemed easier to me.

KIndest Regards --Pete

Thanks Pete! I've added an option for the flowchart for those who already self-host.

Great job! Let me know if (when) you want to link it on the github README.

That would be great! Feel free to add it now

zadam commented 2 years ago

I added the link to README and to https://github.com/zadam/trilium/wiki/Server-installation

zDEFz commented 2 years ago

No PayPal? Please note that the credit card is a very American thing. I don't know anybody who has a credit card here in Germany.

sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Hi, Stripe doesn't support using PayPal as a payment method. Is there an alternative payment method, eg, giropay/sofort? Stripe lists that as "popular in Germany". I'm quite open to adding new payment methods though.

eliandoran commented 2 years ago

Hello, @sigaloid .

I think there's a slight typo in the pricing section:

image

- $2.50/yr or $26/yr
+ $2.50/month or $26/yr
sigaloid commented 2 years ago

Haha oops! Fixed :) thanks!

GRDN-XX commented 1 year ago

Really great service, note takign app is just what I have needed for a long time. Love the hosting, so useful and convenient.

I realized having a proper structure and then taking things like ANGRYsearch did the job for me. I completely ditched Trilium notes. Especially since it is so difficult to use for a large scale database with many different filetypes, huge files, small files, shift-jis files, etc. At this point, I'm far beyond its capability.

i don't see any difference in your case. you share your trilian notes with Strato because the have access on your vps of course…

Bad3r commented 1 year ago

Are there examples of CSS/themes for Trilium static publishing?

sigaloid commented 1 year ago

One example I know of is this: https://github.com/zadam/trilium/discussions/3504

One that I made also adds some features like next/back buttons and anchor buttons to specific paragraphs: https://github.com/zadam/trilium/discussions/2540 (but the color scheme is pretty bad to be honest).

But, designing a theme that fits exactly what you want is relatively easy - there aren't a ton of variables you must design. I played around with it and was able to get it to what I was looking for pretty quickly, knowing very little CSS and searching as I went.

feux-follets commented 1 year ago

How do I unsubscribe to trilium cc? Just asking

sigaloid commented 1 year ago

Hi, Currently I can cancel subscriptions on my end with Stripe. It's a frustrating situation that I'm not sure I can fix without changing much of my Stripe usage. Whenever someone requests a cancellation, though, I cancel as soon as possible. I know it's annoying to contact someone to cancel, but it's something I'm working on fixing. There's also no annoying cancellation surveys, of course.

DLTM181 commented 11 months ago

The contact info on trilium.cc seems to have broken? How do I go about contacting you to cancel my subscription?

TiZ-HugLife commented 10 months ago

Has something gone wrong with this hosting? I've been having a really bad time trying to access my notes remotely lately, and shared notes are working inconsistently as well.

AnaBatranovic commented 10 months ago

been having a similar issue on my end - hope it gets resolved soon! it's been very stable up until about a week ago

DLTM181 commented 10 months ago

status.trilium.cc claims uptime has been 100% for the past few days, but my own domain has been completely inaccessible for that entire period

sigaloid commented 10 months ago

Hi,

Sorry all, this was annoyingly lost in the Github notifications.

Contact is listed on the home page (trilium@trilium.cc). Also, anything @ trilium.cc or matthew.science will get to me.

About the recent downtime: There was some issues with the hosting server after some growing pains. I've since upgraded the server several times over (quadrupled the size!).

The status.trilium.cc endpoint has always been accurate to my knowledge. In fact, it was quite poor this past month, and I am sincerely sorry for this. I have overhauled much of the architecture to be more flexible to growth, if I ever need to.

If a single server does go down, though, it's likely a syncing bug that caused it to crash - you can mail me about this and I will keep an eye on the logs. I advise compacting the database and finding/fixing consistency issues.

I upgraded the server which caused some more temporary downtime this weekend, but it was down to under an hour until all servers are up. I truly believe there will be almost no downtime any time soon (barring below).

Also - I will be transferring to a new domain in the next 2 weeks due to some legal issues (?). All customers will receive an email about this and I plan on leaving the old endpoints open as long as possible. All it will take is switching the sync URL out - your data will all be the same.

TLDR: I am very sorry about the downtime. I foresee no more in the near future - it was a specific problem that I have since remedied.

TiZ-HugLife commented 10 months ago

Thanks very much for the update on this. I'll contact you if my server goes down again.
