Does not correctly expand some TAR files

downloaded and expanded the latest SQLDeveloper.tar.gz from Oracle 
(http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/index.html) 
and found that 
the application would not start up due to missing java libraries.

After much searching of forums was suggested to use OSX built-in expanders, 
gunzip and tar -xvf.  
This resulted in an application that worked without further problems.
