A new icon for Zeal #1204

I would like to create a new application icon for Zeal.

After spending some time in Inkscape, I came up with this, which is of course heavily inspired by the Dash icon.

I would be happy to receive feedback from the community and iterate on the design in this thread, before making a pull request.

A monochrome variation of this icon will also need to be designed for the system tray and the Gnome "activities" menu (and maybe others that I'm not aware of). Probably this would just be the Z itself, without the background.

Looking forward to the feedback!

I like the colors, but I think this is too much Dash :)

Projects are really not too connected apart from sharing the docsets (and Zeal constantly struggling with displaying those).

I'd much rather focus on Zeal having its own recognizable identity. Do you you have any ideas on that front?

I thought that might be the case :) I'll iterate some more!

Sorry for the long wait, I hope everyone is healthy and safe. Here is another iteration, this time more based on the existing icon. Please let me know your thoughts!

@gueorgui hey, I like it!

A few questions:

  1. It resembles the icon for GNOME Devhelp, especially certain variations of it like this one. Do you think it can be made more distinct to avoid possible confusion? Both Zeal and Devhelp may end up next to each other in a menu.

  2. Ideas about a monochrome outline version? The kind GNOME, Unity, ~macOS~, and some other environments prefer as the tray icons.

P.S. I apologize for the delayed response, have been quite busy with the work work.

Wow, I had no idea GNOME Devhelp even existed, and you're right, that icon is pretty much exactly the same...!

I'll have a rethink, but it seems to be difficult to get away from the book metaphor. Do any other concepts come to mind? Also, the colours in my proposed icon come from the existing Zeal icon, and the goal in reusing those was to provide some kind of continuity to limit confusion with a new icon.

As for monochrome versions, once we settle on a design, I'll be able to derive a monochrome version from it, no problem!

What's the issue if it resembles other icons? I get that the first one was too close to Dash, but the second one is great.

The issue would be both Zeal and DevHelp showing up in the menu next to each other and causing confusion. Icons should be distinctive because people pay much more attention to images than text.

Maybe you could try making something like this? not sure if there is any logo this would be confused with. I know my mockup isn't pretty but it should get my idea across. It's still keeping with the theme of the book but is visibly distinct from the old one(and DevHelp). dotgrid-24B01-437301
