To me, split areas in the editor should be more persistent. Currently, when I close the last tab in an area, the area vanishes.
I propose to add another step in between: When the last tab is closed, keep the area present (maybe some placeholder tab?). Now, the area can explicitly be destroyed by the "pane: close active item" action.
It's especially annoying as I have a single "main area" on the left side and roadmap and config areas on the right-hand side. Whenever I finish a task, I'd like to clear the main area to be re-used for new files. But as I close all tabs, the two areas on the right expand to full width, so I need to open a dummy file and re-split everything by hand... This costs at least two splits and some manual resize.
The additional step should be the default IMO, but an "immediately close empty areas" setting could be introduced to reproduce the current behavior.
