I wrote some years ago a couple of AFM data importers for Blender, based on your code, which I use for my own activity.
Can directly import two AFM file formats (.bcrf and .gsf) in Blender, taking account of the pixel width (so several data can be merged in a single Blender scene with meaningful sizes). Can import non-square data and I also changed the way a color scale is added, using OSL language scripts to describe rendering materials.
Now I would like to publish the code (citing your work as reference), as a side utility of a larger project.
