Definitely agree this is the way. I think in the ideal world we'd get more packages to support the configurations we need upstream, to reduce our needs to patch, but especially in the case of this app that isn't practical.
The hedgedoc, mediawiki, and etherpad packages now use a model where instead of wholesale forking the upstream repository and adding .sandstorm & applying patches as commits, there is a separate repo with a
patches/
directory. This makes it a bit easier to keep track of what is different from upstream, because e.g. you can just delete patches when they stop being relevant. At some point I'd like to move to a similar model for TTRSS, though it's not super high priority.
