Just recording some discussion on this:

Uche: This looks good, BTW. I hadn’t thought of the situation of recursive value action functions. Your added test case is nested but not recursive, I think. I wonder what a recursive test case would look like. That said, no harm in at least probing, as your code does.

Mark: I realized it was going a bit far for this specific scenario, but the recursive pattern seemed simplest.
