Web3XR Hackathon

Abstract

According to Zesty Market data, there is about 10-15k DAU using WebXR from their headsets. With great desktop support this number becomes much bigger in terms of DAU. Traffic is there, all we really need now is amazing content!

However, monetization for VR/AR content is difficult, especially on the web which doesn't have established platforms like native app store ecosystems and especially for open source projects. Also, we shouldn't have to rely on centralized platforms to earn our living in anyways because they take a huge cut and naturally the process of having middlemen stifles our freedom to publish.

Goals

It's time to build and promote the intersection of 3D web + gamedev + blockchain. This buildathon can run alongside the virtual conference / expo being produced in collaboration with Neon Buidl so that we can have inspiring environments and presentations in Hyperfy.io, an awesome Web3 / WebXR platform.

Ideas? Is there someone semi-popular who can help us break webxr out of its bubble?

Thanks @madjin for the issue and I think a Web3XR hackathon is a great idea! I like the idea of using Dework bounties + tokens for Web3XR-related tasks, and having a community of contributors get built around this. Even for WebXR today, I know there's a lot of contributors fragmented across the ecosystem so it would be very exciting to see folks rally.

Some questions that still remain open are:

  1. What would be the top three goals of a Web3XR hackathon for its organizers? First goal that comes to mind is general education and awareness, second could be the social aspect of being able to connect people with those that are like-minded, and last is the tech that gets built.
  2. Does blockchain have to be a requirement for an event such as this? I know that there would be a lot of people who love WebXR but are indifferent/impartial to the crypto component. This applies as well to the section about judges.
  3. Should we be more specific about the things that we'd like to see built or tried out during the hackathon, or do we leave it super open-ended? Pros and cons to both, but I'm leaning more towards the former because it would help add structure to the event.

Hope this spurs on some more conversation!

  1. Agree with all of these top 3 goals and overall think metaverse makers should have conferences / expos in the metaverse
  2. Yes I think it should be a requirement to integrate aspects of web3 / webxr together, it can be as lightweight as using assets like those provided for free via openvoxels which also has the assets on github / sketchfab for others to use in projects, or involved as some kind of experiential minting experience. I'm fine with this being niche, less pressure given the short time frame proposed.
  3. Whynotboth.gif: We can promote bounties that align with goals / vision for more specific related ideas, and as open ended as "combine web3 and 3D web / game dev"
