It would be really nice if CellWriter could automatically pop up when the user 
clicks in a text entry field.

Yes, I agree. I don't know enough about GNOME/KDE/X11 IME APIs to know where 
the right hooks are for this or what's required...

Have you tried messing with GTK-IM? I guess something could be dug up. For 
instance view the source of matchbox-keyboard, it uses the gtk input methods to 
appear on text field focus... so I've heard... I unfortunately do not have time 
at the moment to solve this myself, but I will try... I hope this somehow 
helped...
